The new 48-meter suspension footbridge (right photo), a Barangay Infrastructure Project (BIP) constructed by USAID's Growth with Equity in Mindanao (GEM) Program, ensures that approximately 2,900 residents of the barangays of Cadayunan,Tambo, Pantao, Pantaomunai, Maganding and Madaya in Munai, in Lanao del Norte, have safe, year-round pedestrian access across the Liangan River. Previously, residents would cross the river using a single bamboo pole (left photo) as a walkway, when the river was relatively shallow. The new footbridge will encourage more economic activity in the area, and will contribute to the overall development of the community. In partnership with local governments and under the oversight of Mindanao Economic Development Council, the GEM Program will build about 830 more BIPs in the next three years.
